"The Forever-Love of the Good Shepherd & His Mother" (Homily #204)

HOMILY 204: "The Forever-Love of the Good Shepherd & His Mother" (Homily #204) There is a story about a mom. She gave birth to a baby boy. Yes, the newborn required a lot of attention, to feed and change and play with. He even cried during his entire baptism ceremony. It just drove her oh so crazy. But every night, when her son was asleep, she would tip-toe across the room, hold her son close to her heart, rock him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And she would say: I’ll love you forever / I’ll hold you for always / As long as I’m with you / My baby you’ll be. Well, that boy grew. He grew, and he grew and he grew until he was oh 7 yrs. old. Yes, the boy would run around the place, throw his toys everywhere, and was messy esp during dinner. He even struggled with his First Communion classes. He grew, and he grew and he grew until he became that unique creature that we call a teenager. Yes, the boy played loud music, his clothes looked different, and she constantly had to repeat things over and over to him. He even struggled with his Confirmation classes. He grew, and he grew and he grew until he was in college. Yes, he started to see his mom less and brought some strange friends home when he visited. He even struggled going to church. It just drove her oh so crazy. But every night, when her son was asleep in his dormitory, she would tip-toe across the room, hold her son close to her heart, rock him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And she would say: I’ll love you forever / I’ll hold you for always / As long as I’m with you / My baby you’ll be. Well, that boy grew. He grew, and he grew and he grew until he was married and had a newborn girl of his own. Yes, he forgot important many family events over the years and was so busy at work. He even struggled with his marriage. It just drove her oh so crazy. But every night, when her son was asleep, she used her walker to go to her car, drive across town, take out a ladder from her car, climb up to the window, tip-toe across the room, hold her son close to her heart, rock him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And she would say: I’ll love you forever / I’ll hold you for always / As long as I’m with you / My baby you’ll be. Well one day, the son got a phone call. The doctor said, “Come quickly, your mom is declining.” Just as he grew and grew and grew, she also grew and grew and grew… older. So at the hospital, he saw her laying on the bed unconscious with tubes and medicines around her. He tip-toed across the room, held his mom close to his heart, she slowly opened her eyes one final time, smiled, and as she breathed her last breath, he gently rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And he said: I’ll love you forever / I’ll hold you for always / As long as I’m with you / My mommy you’ll be. As we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter, we focus on not just Jesus as our Good Shepherd, but the CONSTANT LOVE of the Good Shepherd for you personally. In today’s Gospel, Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. … No one can take them out of my hand.” In many ways, we are like the son in this parable story called “I’ll Love You Forever” written by Robert Munch and illustrated by Sheila McGraw. The mom shows the non-stop love of a Good Shepherd. You see, with all our human failures and sins and imperfections, we drive God oh so crazy. But it is a crazy, madly deeply passionately crazy type of love with you. He delights in you. We are his people, the sheep of His flock. And every night represents every moment … of our lives, whenever we are asleep and unaware of God’s presence, Jesus will quietly tiptoe in the silence of our broken hearts when we feel alone. He holds us close to his heart, his holy and sacred heart. He gently rocks us back and forth, between falling down in sin, but getting back up in grace, back and forth, back and forth with God. He says: I’ll love you forever and ever and ever. I’ll hold for always. As long as I’m with you as your shepherd, my precious baby lamb you’ll be. He is with us in the Eucharist. And as we celebrate Mother’s Day, too, today, we are reminded of the human wisdom saying: God could not be everywhere, and so God created mothers. It is true Jesus the Good Shepherd ordains Popes and bishops and priests to shepherd us, but here is another point of reflection: Shepherding isn’t just on the Pope and bishops, because mothers and motherly figures somewhat share in the love of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Remember, mothers, at baptism, we promised God to raise our children in the Faith, even when it’s difficult! It’s like in the First Reading when Paul and Barnabas talked about Jesus, but people persecuted them for talking about Jesus. Like the mom in the story, love persists in difficulties. Finally, Jesus the Good Shepherd loves us so much that he gives us his mother to be our own spiritual mother. In John Chapter 19, Jesus said from the Cross, “Behold your mother.” We crown her our mother. How great is the love of not just the Good Shepherd but also the heart of the mother, her immaculate and sinless heart! The first Christians in Rome would go to the Mother of the Good Shepherd anytime there was a pandemic, a plague, war, or crisis. And she would undo those knots and layers of problems and trials in our lives. In our time, with Russia threatening world peace, it is important to note that consecrating Russia to the Immaculate Heart is not enough. We have to do our part! As I said earlier, it’s not just on the Pope to consecrate Russia, but we have to do our part in conversion and repentance away from sin every day. Back and back and forth, back and forth. [SLOWLY] Let’s consider the Five First Saturday Devotion. This is when, for 5 consecutive First Saturdays, one receives Holy Communion, goes to Confession, recites 5 decades o the rosary, keeps Our Lady company for 15 minutes with the intention of making reparation to her loving Heart. With the consecration of Russia and the Five First Sat. Devotion, one will be assisted in life and at the hour of death and a period of world peace will be granted to the world. In closing, thank you mothers for giving us life; thank you, Jesus, for giving us your Mother; thank you, Almighty Father, for sending us your Son. As it is written in the Book of Revelation, “For the Lamb … will Shepherd them… and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” God says to each of us: I’ll love you forever. I’ll hold you for always. As long as I’m with you, my baby you’ll be.

helped get a priest to a dying relative

Early this morning, we called 11 places/people to get a priest for someone dying in the hospital.

It took about 4-5 hours.

Am grateful to 3 priests who eventually helped make it happen.

As the priest was saying the prayers, the dying person took her last breath.

Thank you, God.

Pray for more priests.
